There is something about the slowness. A pencil drawing takes a long time relative to what it produces. Each intention only a small line of gray. You cannot rush the hatching. You cannot borrow drama from color. What you have is pressure, an angle, and the decision, made thousands of times in a single sitting, of when to stop.
