Rembrandt's Apostle Paul in deep thought

To copy a painting is to submit to it. There is no interpretation to hide behind, no subject matter to carry you forward on its own interest. You must look at what is actually there. The angle at which light strikes an aging cheek, the particular gray of a man lost in thought. And then confess, brushstroke by brushstroke, how much you have failed to see.
